Description
WhiteSwell approached me to create a series of illustrations and short animations about lymphatic function in healthy individuals vs. patients with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF). They had recently developed a proprietary medical device to help treat patients with impaired thoracic duct function and needed a standout image to accompany an upcoming journal publication. Their goal was to communicate the underlying physiology and mechanism of action of interstitial fluid build-up, lymphatic drainage via the thoracic duct, and the impact of elevated central venous pressure on limiting flow through the thoracic duct. The final illustrations and animations were used in publications and presentations for a clinical audience in addition to being displayed online for an educated lay audience.
After receiving the creative brief and content outline, I created 4 thumbnail sketches to explore different ways to lay out the story in a 1920x1080 format. I wanted to keep the design modular so the illustrated assets could be used in a variety of media, such as animation, down the line.
Production
After the client chose their favourite layout, I proceeded to create a refined sketch, followed by colour blocking. The final render was illustrated using Procreate for iPad and composited in Adobe Illustrator.
